Three Favorite Books of 2022 (So Far)

Favorites

Are you a lover of books? If so, welcome. I’m glad you’re here. You’re definitely in good company.:-)

It’s doubtful I’ll ever get tired of talking about books I’m reading. It’s one of my favorite conversations, and I love having it with new and old friends.

So, in that spirit–here is a list of three of my favorite books that I’ve read so far in 2022.

Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

Last year I read Circe by Madeline Miller, and was immediately fascinated by the novelization of Greek mythology. I had no idea that C.S. Lewis had written something similar! Till We Have Faces is a reimagining of the story of Cupid and Pysche (that I knew very little about) told from the perspective of Pysche’s sister, Orual. It is written in the first person and is immediately captivating. The book also had layers of analogy and meaning that I think I will have to read several more times to totally understand. And re-reading to understand is a good thing, I think. 🙂

Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin

I picked up this book at the local library, and couldn’t put it down. First published in 1961, it is the story of a middle class white man who dyed his skin black as an experiment in the racial segregation and discrimation of that time. It was riveting and heartbreaking, and I think a needed contribution to the always on-going conversation about race. It’s a heavier book that you will want to discuss with your people, I think.

The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald

At the beginning of this year, I was a little burnt out on hefty reads that required a lot of thinking and processing. That burn out resulted in a mini decision to only finish books that I genuinely enjoyed and wanted to keep reading! That mini decision has resulted in reading several books that are typically seen as children’s literature. Oh, it’s been so refreshing though. Children’s books almost always have deeper themes hidden in them for adults to find, and the Princess and the Goblin is that way. It’s descriptive and funny, and I read straight through it in only two evenings. If you’re needing a book that is light but not fluffy, and captures your imagination again, you should definitely read The Princess and the Goblin. (Even if you’ve read it before!)

What have you been reading? I would love to hear. Comment below, if you care to. You can also sign up for my occasional Studio emails, where I usually have a note or two about what I’ve been reading. Click here to sign up for that.

I adore art. Most of my best friends are artists. I believe beauty will save the world. I hate the idea that beautiful things might stop spreading because the people who make them don't know how to talk about them. I'm here to help you know and/or do it for you.
