One of the things that I dislike most in life is regretting something that I purchased. Usually it’s an item of clothing (I just bought a cute outfit for Poppy from Target this fall that she immediately grew out of) but sometimes it’s something bigger, like a business education course or a piece of furniture.
Honestly, regret in general is one of my biggest fears.
And I think this fear of regret is one of the things that holds small business owners back from pushing their business forward.
“What if I don’t end up liking this design?”
“What if this coach isn’t a good fit for me?”
Or, worst of all,
“What if they laugh at me?”
“What if I lose the money?”
Making the decision to invest in copywriting can be big and scary for small business owners. Maybe you aren’t sure yet of what you want your brand voice to sound like, or feel cringey about how it sounds right now. Maybe you haven’t settled on exactly WHAT you offer, and don’t know how to explain it to a copywriter… so that your copywriter can put it into words your audience will understand.
Here’s what I want you to know: you do not have to have it all together to hire a copywriter. In fact, I think if you have your business act completely together, you probably should not hire someone to write copy for your business.
Copywriting is powerful not because it regurgitates exactly what you have in your mind already about your creative business, but because it sees the big picture through the eyes of your audience. Copywriting can be the solid framework you continue to build your business on, instead of a finishing touch once you have the main thing mostly built.
As the world of business and especially online business gets bigger and louder, it is increasingly crucial that businesses have complete clarity on what they do, how they do it, and who they do it for. Copywriting can bring you that clarity.
If you’ve ever felt confused about your creative business, not sure what you offer, and squeamish about talking about it with your clients, I suggest hiring a copywriter. You will get professional hours of time dedicated to understanding your business, why it is different, and how to tell your audience about it.
What if you regret hiring a copywriter? It’s a valid question. But also—what if you regret not hiring a copywriter? What if you could get clarity on your business sooner? What if in a few years you’re still just limping along, not totally sure what you’re about, because you never took a risk?
