I talk a lot here about “the early days of business,” and there are a couple different reasons why. One, I think, is because I’m certain I will always feel new and inexperienced, to some degree. Almost all of us entrepreneurs are always growing and learning; and that constant movement often makes us feel like the new kid on the block.
The other reason, though, is because the days of establishing a business are uniquely sweet and vulnerable. So many ideas! So little knowledge! So many late night Google-ing sessions to figure out how to build a website, what the market is like for your idea, if anyone else has thought of it before.
Tangled in with it all, of course, is the constant need to find words to articulate this creative business thing you’re building.
So, what should you do? Should you hire a copywriter to build the foundational words and message of your creative business from the very beginning? Should you try to do it yourself? How do you know for sure?
When you feel totally stuck
Have you ever sat down to write a piece of copy for your creative business and just… blanked? You sit there for what feels like hours, watching the screen blink at you, typing a few words and then deleting them right away. You get distracted from writing copy for your website, instead opting to design the products for your next seasonal drop, play with some new photography angles, or map out your new workshop idea.
If you feel completely stuck and distracted when you try to write copy for your creative business, it is likely time to hire a copywriter. A copywriter’s actual job is to focus on where your creative business’ goals meet the specifics of what your clients need and want, and then articulate it in a clear way that is unique to your business and what you value. You don’t have to feel stuck. A copywriter can take that trapped feeling off of your hands.
When you don’t have time
Time is our most valuable resource as humans living in the world. This isn’t complicated. We all are looking for more time. When you feel pulled in a thousand directions and just don’t have the space in your schedule to sit down and write, it is time to out-source your copywriting to a professional.
When you want a foundation
What does it mean to you to have a foundation for your business? If you are like most creative businesses, your foundation includes a core mission, core idea, and core values that keep you going. But how do you get that?
If you’re ready to have your driving force articulated in a way that makes it easy for you to communicate what your business is about, it is time to hire a copywriter. A copywriter will dive into why you started your business and what lasting impact you want to bring into the world. A copywriter will give you words that you can use to train your employees, talk about in your podcast interviews, and communicate in a variety of ways to your ideal clients.
When you’re ready to grow
You’re probably already growing. However, if you are getting to a stage in your business where you are needing a higher volume of copy on a more frequent basis (ie, your website is expanding regularly, you send emails every week) then it is probably time to hire someone to help you with your copywriting. A professional copywriter for creative businesses does not have to do ALL of your copywriting in order to be a huge asset to your business! Simply having someone available to help you out and take some of the load off your hands can be crucial as you move your creative endeavor to new and exciting places.
